Wayne Rooney is an extremely gifted footballer who plays for English giants Manchester United in the Premiership. He is held in high esteem by many soccer pundits and fellow players, and is one of the game’s most recognizable faces on the planet. And he is not a veteran by any stretch of imagination- he is just 22 years old. Born on October 24, 1985 in Liverpool, Rooney supported Everton as a child and was signed by the Toffees when he was 11 years old.

He made his Premiership debut against Tottenham Hotspur, but burst into the limelight with a stunning strike against Spurs’ bitter North London rivals, Arsenal. Wayne Rooney’s first Premiership goal had ended the Gunners’ 30 match unbeaten streak and made him the then youngest ever goal scorer in the Premiership.

 It was a clear indication that the teenager was destined for stardom. Rooney earned his first senior cap against Australia in February 2003. He was one of England’s best players at Euro 2004, and has now become an integral part of the national side. He is also England’s youngest ever goal scorer, and was the youngest to play for the Three Lions before Theo Walcott surpassed him.

Rooney is a versatile footballer , and is generally seen playing as a second striker. He sits just behind the main forward, and is the source of many team goals, both directly and indirectly. He is a thorough team man, and is often seen running back and making tackles to help out his midfield and defense He has won several awards, including the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year in 2006.

He wears the no. 10 for Manchester United , a number which has been donned by footballers with excellent technical skills and sublime ball control, such as Zidane, Pele, Maradona and co. If Rooney does continue to play at Old Trafford for a few more years, die hard fans of the Red Devils will be seen taking his name in the same breath as Eric Cantona, George Best, Bobby Charlton and other United legends.
